…I’m wondering how it is possible that I’m afraid to speak out loud just because I fear the other players will judge me based on the fact that I am a girl. I use the text chat just because I’m afraid that once they hear my voice something bad will happen. I know this sounds like attention whoring but I assure you, I’m not trying to throw any feminism or shit in your face with what I’m going for with this post.
I’ve seen and heard about so much hate focused on female gamers I’m afraid to reveal my gender even though I play with fellow Finns (it’s less scary when I don’t have to think in English). But every second I play my hands are shaking because I’m afraid that they will find out that I am *gasp* in fact female. Just look at this video for an example:
I don’t know what the argument was about. Maybe they had a reason to be mad at her but holy shit. Their message is basically that if you’re a girl you aren’t allowed to play because this is a playground for boys only and if you’re a girl and you play video games you’re invading their holy ground and should be punished. There’s also a whole website that shows exactly how women are treated in online games (can’t remember what it’s called but it wasn’t a pretty sight). I’m genuinely afraid to play online as a girl.
Does it have to be this way? Is it right that I have to be afraid just because I’m not born a man? I still want to play games like everyone else but I want to be able to be myself and I’m afraid to. Why must I pretend to be sexless in order to enjoy playing a game to its full potential?
Reblogging my own post because today I remembered the video I talked about almost a year ago and this is still relevant. Even though I make Youtube videos I still don’t use the in-game voice chat in online games because I’m too afraid.
